Sable Island wild horses

“In my dreams you are here” 30 x 40 inches, oil on canvas

Gosh it’s been awhile, hasn’t it. Here’s a little bit about my latest painting “In my dreams you are here”.

Wild horses on Sable Island have been protected since 1961 from human intervention, roaming freely without predators on this 43km long crescent-shaped sand bar of an island. It rises out of the Atlantic 300km off the east coast of Canada and remains a primitive haven for seabirds, seals and its horses who manage to survive through harsh winter storms and summers, roaming the grassy sand dunes and digging for fresh water, even eating sea kelp that washes up on its shores. Legend has it that horses first landed there from European shipwrecks in the 1600’s although there is proof that at least some were transported there from the mainland deliberately.

This painting is available, varnished and ready to ship. A portion of its proceeds will be donated to AmericanWildHorseCampaign.org ( @freewildhorses on Instagram) who continue to work tirelessly to stop the helicopter roundups and inhumane treatment of our wild horses here in the USA and to revise the current adoption program that frequently leads to export & slaughter.  Wild horses can be managed effectively with the safe and proven PZP birth control vaccine, while remaining free on the land that has been their home long before we got here.

Thanks again to Katharine Burns for the beautiful reference photos to work from! Someday I hope to visit Sable Island in person myself - for now I am so grateful to those who share their experiences with the rest of us.
